The book covers the Vedic age, the post-Vedic civilization, North India in the Sixth Century BC It also explains new religious movements, Mauryan age, political disintegration and foreign invasions. The Gupta empire North India, Deccan, South India, India’s intercouse with the outside world, social and economic conditions, political, institutions, religion, language and literature, art and the architecture have been discussed in depth. Author has tried in maintaining a delicate balance between political history and social, economic and cultural history of ancient period. It is hoped that this book will serve as text for Honors and Postgraduate students. Research students can also use it as a main source book.

Author Biography

Dr S N SEN is presently Professor and Head, Department of History, Calcutta University. He obtained his D.PhiI and D.Litt. degrees from Calcutta University. He started his career as a Research Fellow from Calcutta University and later he joined Vidyasagar College, Calcutta and become Head of the Department in the same college. Dr Sen has also served as a senior Reader at the University of North Bengal. He is author of Anglo-Maratha Relations during the Administration of Warren Hastings, and Anglo-Maratha Relations. His two other works History of Modern India and Europe and the World published by Wiley
