Throughout their +2 degree, students frequently state that they are undecided about whether to pursue a career in medicine or engineering. Unless you want to assist mankind by serving the society for free, this is a difficult decision that should be made after serious study of the constraints of actual life. Whether it’s buying a pair of shoes or choosing a career path, the number of options and choices has expanded to the point where making selections consumes a substantial amount of our time. Pakistanis have a reputation for leaning toward more lucrative and “safe” fields such as engineering and medicine when it comes to jobs.
No matter who you ask about a person’s career choice, you’ll get the same replies. Engineer or physician? It’s as simple as that. There is no other choice. There is nothing beyond these two fields. Everyone aspires to become a doctor or an engineer as quickly as feasible. Is it, however, possible to limit yourself to these two choices? Is there anything else besides these two? Is it possible that everyone will pick these two options? Possibly a resounding ‘NO.’ So, why are so many people hasting to become doctors and engineers? Everyone takes these perspectives from their elders. There are only two professions that one should choose. This is a desi stereotype which we want to change. There are so many other highly paid professions that everyone can choose which one they want. Not important to select a career only between a doctor and an engineer.
Engineer or Doctor?
In middle-class Pakistan, engineering and medicine have traditionally been the two most searched professions. Engineering, on the other hand, appears to be gaining traction as an engineer’s professional path has become more defined. A four-year engineering degree from a good engineering college can earn you a good wage. Five years of basic medical education from a reputable institution, on the other hand, will get you nowhere until you undertake a PG specialization, which takes another three years. Much yet, it would be even better if you pursued a ‘super–specialization,’ which requires an additional two years.
Survival of a Student
Medical school student life is far more difficult than engineering student life. The former practically requires you to ignore your personal life in order to study, study, and study some more. While getting into a good college is the most difficult step for aspiring engineers, the rest of the path is rather smooth.
Doctors are real beneficiaries in this regard. Doctors are lifesavers, and patients and the general public frequently regard them as semi-gods. Either Engineering is just another career. Doctors have a much harder time establishing themselves than engineers. B.Tech degree holders are in high demand once again, especially to the emergence of IT. You won’t have to look back if you complete an MBA after your B.Tech. A doctor, on the other hand, needs time to develop. A doctor’s ability to make quick money is limited.
Earnings
Engineering: A four-year engineering degree will earn you an annual package of 4 to 5 lacs, while an MBA would get you a package of 12 to 45 lacs. Engineers‘ jobs have grown far more secure since the introduction of technology.
Medical Doctor: The MBBS program is just the start. After that, you can acquire a position and start your practice, although an MBBS degree alone isn’t worth much in today’s market. As a result, if you want to earn 5 to 6 lacs per year, you’ll need to specialize. If you have family members who work in the medical industry, it makes a lot of sense to pursue a career in medicine because your career will be boosted naturally as clients will be referred to you.
Doctors who own their own clinics and hospitals make a lot of money. If you have sufficient money to develop a hospital, you should not hesitate to enter the medical field; you will undoubtedly make a lot of money.
Breaking the Desi Stereotypes
When it comes to deciding on a course of study, it is critical to ask questions in order to understand the motives of young adults and provide them with food for thought. What motivates people to choose a certain decision: pay, advantages, type of employment, or responsibilities? When it comes to picking a profession or occupation, the relative importance of these characteristics differs from individual to individual and everyone has their own priorities.
Males and females not only have stereotypes about others, but they also describe themselves as having stereotyped perspectives. These stereotyped self-characterizations have significant implications for people’s decisions and behaviors, particularly when it comes to their professional lives. They think that they have only two career options rather than become a doctor or engineer.
There is a considerable self-selection effect when it comes to choosing a study area or profession, people prefer to gravitate into science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines. The sense of a lack of fit is based on more than just apparent abilities. People’s assessments of whether they would feel comfortable working in a given role or career field are also essential. In other words, both men and women assess their match in regards to whether or not they feel at home. When people expect others in this profession or field to be very similar to them, they have a stronger sense of belonging.
Choose a Profession that Interests you
Earning while in college is a great way to pay for college expenses while also gaining a foot in the door of your chosen profession. Despite the fact that your academics are likely to take precedence, there is a range of professions for college students that offer flexible hours and pay more than the government’s basic salary. College students have a variety of career options in a range of areas. Here are some examples of professions that can help you pay for your education as you finish it:

People who work in the disciplines of marketing and brand management are rewarded with a variety of profitable and non-incentives. In Pakistan, being a Human Resource Professional is also a very appealing profession. PIQC, LUMS, LSE, IBA, and Punjab University are among the institutions being considered in this regard. Graduates are engaged either directly by the employer or through any external marketing company in Pakistan.

It takes a long time to become a lawyer, which is why it is one of the highest-paying jobs in Pakistan. You must first pass the HEC Law Admission Test. After that, you’ll need to get an LLB from a reputable university. You’ll be eligible to take the HEC Law Graduate Entry Exam after gaining more experience, and then you’ll be able to apply for a license to practice from Pakistan’s Central Board.
Conclusion
There’s nothing wrong with pursuing a career that will provide your family with financial security or bragging rights. However, we must understand that other occupations have worth as well — and not only to the individual worker who gets to do something they actually enjoy. “If you’re not at the table, you’re on the menu,” as they say in politics. Volunteering, activism, and other types of civic participation can also bring people in STEM and business to the table. We may challenge stereotypes and enhance our perspectives outside of the sphere of economics by playing more diversified roles in society.
