Author Biography
Syed Fazal ul Hassan (1875–1951), universally celebrated by his pen name Hasrat Mohani, was a monumental Urdu romantic poet, fearless journalist, and legendary freedom fighter. Born in the town of Mohan, Uttar Pradesh, he graduated from Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College (now Aligarh Muslim University). Mohani was a true revolutionary who uniquely bridged the worlds of radical politics and deep literary romanticism. He famously coined the immortal independence slogan Inquilab Zindabad (“Long Live the Revolution”) in 1921 and became the first political leader to demand complete independence (Azadi-e-Kaamil) from British colonial rule at an Indian National Congress session.
In the realm of literature, Hasrat Mohani is revered as the Raees-ul-Mutaghazzileen (The King of Ghazal Writers) for single-handedly rejuvenating the traditional Urdu ghazal during a period of classical decline. He masterfully fused the passionate, soulful aesthetic of classical love poetry with modernist themes of socio-political protest and anti-colonial resistance. Even while facing rigorous imprisonment by the British, during which his magazines were banned and books confiscated, he famously wrote verses about grinding flour in jail while continuing his poetic devotion. His literary masterpiece, Kulliyat-e-Hasrat Mohani, along with iconic individual ghazals like “Chupke Chupke Raat Din,” continue to endure as absolute highlights of Urdu musicality, passion, and emotional simplicity.
