The invention of the Dewey Decimal Classification has played a vital role in giving a direction and shape to the modern librarianship. It is not for nothing that Melvil Dewey is given the appellation of the father of modern librarianship.

The book has undergone 18 revisions to keep itself abreast of the ever advancing frontiers of knowledge and to cater to the increasing demand of its users. The 19th revision is presently underway. In every revision, it has been expanded, modified, rectified and made more modern in methods by applying the results of the latest research in library classification.

The book simply aims to introduce students to the process of assigning and especially synthesizing the class numbers by the 19th edition of the DDC.

Authors Biography

John Phillip Comaromi earned his Ph.D. in 1969 from the University of Michigan for his work on the history of the Dewey Decimal Classification. He is now a distinguished alumnus of the University of Michigan.

Mohinder Partap Satija, currently on the teaching faculty of the Guru Nanak Dev University, is a librarian with 20 years’ experience. He is the author of about a dozen professional books and a score of papers published in Indian and foreign library journals. Mr. Satija is a life member of the Indian Library Association, the Indian Association of Teachers of Library and Information Science and the Indian Society for Information Science. He is Indian Coordinator of the International Society for Knowledge Organization (ISKO), West Germany. He is on the Editorial Board of the Outlook on Research Libraries (Elsevier, the UK).
