A Workbook to improve students’ grammar and vocabulary skills

Basic English Practice consists of six workbooks, 1A to 3B, aimed at providing written activities for children aged between four and six in countries where English is taught as a first language. It can also be used by older children in countries where English is a second or foreign language.

The activities are carefully designed to reinforce children’s understanding of all the important aspects of grammar that they need to be familiar with. These include learning the different word classes or parts of speech (like nouns, adjectives, verbs, prepositions and conjunctions), understanding the correct usage of punctuation and recognizing sentences, phrases, questions and interjections. This series also provides practice in vocabulary through activities involving synonyms and antonyms, word games and puzzles. Answers are provided at the end of each book for teachers’ and parents’ reference.

With its varied activities, accompanied by lively illustrations, this series demonstrates that the learning of grammar for children need not be difficult or dull. On the contrary, when the activities are interesting and age appropriate, the learning of grammar can be fun. These workbooks may be used alongside any English grammar texts for young learners. It is hope that children will enjoy working through the books and will find that completing the exercises gives them a better understanding of English.

Authors Biography

Y H Mew is a graduate in History of the former University of Singapore (now the National University of Singapore). He was a teacher for several years before becoming an editor and later a publisher of educational and children’s books. He takes a keen interest in the teaching of English to young and adult learners.

Rosalind Fergusson, a former teacher, has spent 25 years compiling a wide range of language related reference books. She has contributed to Chambers School Spelling (2003), Cassell Dictionary of English Idioms (1999), Macmillan Guide to English Grammar(1998), among others. She is an editor, lexicographer, writer, and a former teacher with a wide range of reference books to her name. She lives in Kent with her husband David and occupies her leisure time with walking, sailing, literature and music.
