Author Biography

Malcolm X (1925–1965) was a prominent African American civil rights activist known for his dynamic oratory and advocacy for black empowerment. Born Malcolm Little, he faced racial discrimination and his family experienced violence from white supremacists. After a troubled youth involving criminal activities, Malcolm X underwent a transformation while in prison, converting to the Nation of Islam and adopting the X as a symbol of his lost African identity.

As a minister in the Nation of Islam, he preached black nationalism and separatism. Tensions within the organization and personal growth led to his break with the Nation of Islam in 1964. He embraced Sunni Islam and shifted towards a more inclusive stance on racial issues. Malcolm X’s international travels, including a pilgrimage to Mecca, broadened his perspective.

On February 21, 1965, during a speech at the Audubon Ballroom in New York City, Malcolm X was assassinated. His legacy endures as a symbol of the struggle for civil rights and justice. The Autobiography of Malcolm X, co-authored with Alex Haley, provides a powerful account of his life and has had a lasting impact on discussions about race and social justice in America.
