Henri Pierre Roché (1879–1959) was a French writer and art collector best known for his novel “Jules and Jim,” which was later adapted into a renowned film by François Truffaut. Born on May 28, 1879, in Paris, Roché was part of the avant-garde artistic circles in the early 20th century.

Roché’s “Jules and Jim,” published in 1953 when he was in his seventies, explores complex themes of love and friendship. The novel, set against the backdrop of World War I and inspired by Roché’s own experiences, tells the story of a romantic triangle involving two men and a woman.

Apart from his literary pursuits, Roché was deeply immersed in the art world, associating with influential figures like Marcel Duchamp and collecting works of art. His life and relationships with prominent cultural figures of his time provided inspiration for “Jules and Jim,” securing his place in literary and cinematic history. Henri Pierre Roché passed away on April 9, 1959, leaving behind a legacy as a key figure in early 20th-century cultural and artistic movements.
