Description

This is the story of Kalam’s own rise from obscurity and his personal and professional struggles, as well as the story of Agni, Prithvi, Akash, Trishul and Nag – missiles that have become household names in India. Kalam has come to personally represent to many of his countrymen the best aspects of Indian life. Born in 1931, the son of a little educated boatowner in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, he had an unparalleled career as a defense scientist, culminating in the highest civilian award of India, the Bharat Ratna.

At the same time as he has helped create India’s awesome weaponry, Kalam has maintained the ascetic rigor of his personal life, working 18 hours a day and practicing the veena. He describes the struggles of his boyhood and youth, bringing alive everyday life in a small town in South India and the inspirational role of educators.

Author Biography

A. P. J. Abdul Kalam (1931–2015) was India’s 11th President and a renowned scientist known as the “Missile Man.” Born on October 15, 1931, in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, he played a crucial role in India’s space and missile programs. His presidency (2002–2007) focused on education and youth development. Dr. Kalam aimed for India’s development by 2020 and authored inspirational works like “Wings of Fire.” Known for his simplicity and humility, he passed away on July 27, 2015. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam’s legacy endures as a symbol of scientific achievement, visionary leadership, and inspiration for millions, particularly the youth.
