Author Biography

Maxim Gorky (1868–1936) was a prominent Russian and Soviet writer, considered one of the founders of socialist realism in literature. Born Alexei Maximovich Peshkov on March 28, 1868, in Nizhny Novgorod, he adopted the pseudonym Maxim Gorky, meaning “Maxim the Bitter.” Gorky’s early life was marked by poverty and hardship, which strongly influenced his works. His notable writings include “The Lower Depths” and his autobiographical trilogy, “My Childhood,” “In the World,” and “My Universities.” Gorky’s literary contributions and his support for the Bolsheviks during the Russian Revolution elevated him to a prominent position in Soviet literature, although his relationship with the Soviet government became complex over time. He passed away on June 18, 1936.
