Description

Technology has emerged as the most important strategic resource contributing to the socio-economic development of a nation. Its role in promoting business competitiveness and creation of wealth is widely recognized. As an engine of economic growth, technology needs to be managed efficiently and effectively both at the firm and the national levels (i.e., micro and macro levels). Technology Management (TM) aims at planning and developing the technological capabilities of an organization (or a nation) and has now come to occupy the centre stage of decision-making in the management of business and industrial enterprises.

Technology management, among others, requires deep understanding of the catalytic role of R&D and innovation, technology life cycles, product, process and system development, acquisition, commercialization and transfer of new technologies, creation and management of intellectual property, and the need for developing an organizational environment that promotes R & D and technology to be effectively and systematically managed, for technology is dynamic and often unpredictable. Above all, it requires thorough understanding of the central role of corporate management in providing the necessary structures and sinews for technology development and management. The enabling macro environment in terms of government policies, instruments, linkages, technical education and societal values are equally important as they contribute in building technological capability and progress of the country. With disruptive technologies looming all around on the horizon, the task of technology management is becoming more challenging.

There are several universities and institutions around the globe, especially in technologically conscious countries, including India that offer the discipline of Technology Management as a full time or part-time MBA specialization. General MBA programmes with a group of specialized (optional) courses in technology management, and specialized PG Diploma programmes (one year or so) are available. Executive MBA programmes are also being offered with specialization in TM. In many cases, those enrolled in an Executive MBA in Technology Management programmes are working professionals who have been in their field three or more years. These programmes may be completed in one year to three years depending upon objectives and whether they are full time, part-time or through distance learning. Short term Executive Development Programmes (EDPs) are also being offered for working executives. The TM oriented programmes are focused on developing leaders in the business world who are adept in managing current and new technologies as well as understanding of how to adapt to the rapid technological changes within the workplace.

Structured into 20 chapters, the book is a comprehensive attempt to systematically analyze and explain the various issues and aspects of Technology Management in the organized and non-organized business sectors. Hopefully, learners in MBA, MTech./MS programmes, faculty, corporate executives, management trainers, and R D personnel will find the book a valuable resource.
