Description
Deewan-e-Zafar is the historic collection of Urdu ghazals by Bahadur Shah Zafar, the tragic last Mughal Emperor of India who reigned from 1837 to 1857. Compiled from his extensive poetic output, this volume represents a unique and poignant intersection of imperial history and classical South Asian literature. Far from the grand, celebratory verses typical of court life, this Deewan provides a deeply intimate, unfiltered look into the mind of a ruler who watched his centuries-old dynasty crumble under British colonial expansion.
The collection is celebrated for its profound emotional weight, centering on themes of political helplessness, deep spiritual mysticism (sufism), and the fleeting nature of worldly power. Written primarily in a highly musical and conversational dialect of Urdu, the verses beautifully capture the cultural brilliance of the late Mughal court alongside a heavy, haunting sense of personal grief. Containing iconic, globally recognized masterpieces—including the agonizing verses he penned during his eventual exile in Rangoon—this definitive Deewan stands as both an invaluable historical artifact and a timeless masterpiece of melancholic Urdu verse.
Author Biography
Mirza Abu Zafar Sirajuddin Muhammad Bahadur Shah Zafar was the last emperor of India and a member of the Mughal Timurid dynasty. He became the successor to his father, Akbar II with his death on 28 September 1837. He used Zafar, (translation: victory) a part of his name.
He was one of the great Urdu poets of his time and a disciple of famous Urdu poets Shaikh Ibrahim Zauq and Mirza Ghalib. Four of Zafar’s poetry collections were published prior to the War of Independence 1857, when much of his unpublished poetry was lost. After the Rebellion, he was exiled to Burma. His total present works comprise about thirty thousand couplets, covering almost all genres of Urdu poetry. Zafar died in exile on 7 November 1862 in Rangoon (now Yangon) at the age of 87 years.
